Georgia Ranks Among the Worst States for Safe Online Dating, According to PrivacyJournal

As online dating continues to grow in popularity—with approximately 70% of U.S. adults having tried it, according to Pew Research—concerns about safety remain paramount. A recent report by PrivacyJournal has shed light on the safety landscape across different states, highlighting Georgia as one of the most hazardous for online daters.

Based on data related to cybercrimes such as romance scams, identity theft, and violent crimes, Georgia ranks among the least safe states for online dating. The report notes that Georgia experiences 395 fraud reports per 100,000 residents, and the FBI’s Internet Crime Report 2024 indicates the state potentially lost $420 million to cybercriminals in 2024—a 40% increase from the previous year.

While Georgia faces significant risks in fraud and identity theft, it surprisingly ranks third lowest in reported romance scam cases nationwide. Nonetheless, the overall safety concerns are substantial, especially considering the state’s high STD rates and violent crime statistics.

In contrast, Kentucky emerges as the safest southern state for online dating, ranking 7th for fraud cases and performing well across most safety metrics, excluding sex offender reports. The top five safest states for online dating are Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Iowa, and Kentucky.

On the other end of the spectrum, Nevada, Alaska, Georgia, Arizona, and Delaware are identified as the least safe states for online daters, with Georgia notably ranking among the worst.

Regarding popular dating platforms, Pew Research’s 2023 data shows Tinder remains the most used app, with 46% of online daters having tried it. Match follows at 31%, and Bumble is used by 28% of online daters.

As the online dating landscape evolves, users are encouraged to stay vigilant and prioritize safety, especially in states with higher risks. For more insights on online safety and cybercrime prevention, visit FBI Cyber Crime and PrivacyJournal.
