Champaign Police Warn About Safety Risks on Dating Apps Amid Armed Robbery Investigation
Authorities in Champaign are cautioning residents about potential safety risks associated with online dating platforms, following an armed robbery investigation where the suspect reportedly used the app Jack’d to lure the victim. While the suspect’s use of this particular app has raised concerns, police emphasize that any dating application can be vulnerable to misuse.
Detective Timothy Rivest of the Champaign Police Department advised users to adopt safety measures when meeting someone from a dating app. He recommended conducting a video call to verify the person’s identity or performing a reverse image search of their profile picture via Google to check for consistency across social media platforms. “If they’re willing to do that, it can help ensure you’re talking to the real person,” Rivest explained.
The detective also stressed the importance of reporting any suspicious activity or crimes without hesitation. “No one should feel ashamed or embarrassed to come forward,” Rivest said. Authorities encourage anyone with relevant information to contact Crime Stoppers or local law enforcement agencies.
This incident underscores the need for online daters to remain vigilant and prioritize their safety. Experts from organizations like the Psychology Today recommend verifying identities and trusting your instincts when engaging with new contacts online.
